Zakynthos Island Greece - Zakynthos Greece - Tour and Travel guide Hotels Flights
Zakynthos, also called Zante, or "Fiore di Levande" (The flower of East Wind) is a sparkling diamond under the sun, surrounded by the emerald waters of the Ionian Sea. Zakynthos, the artistic center of the Ionian islands, island of natural beauties, of arts and spirit.
Zakynthos is the southernmost island in the Ionian group, a short distance off the north-western tip of the Peloponnese. Greek tourists have been coming to Zante long before international visitors started to get to know and appreciate its many attractions.
Zante’s geography ranges from the mountainous landscape in the north of the island to the gentle hills and flat countryside of the south. Springs abound and contribute to very green valleys and country lanes covered with wild flowers. Coastal cliffs and miles of golden beaches could make many other Greek islands look to its laurels. The beach resorts of this delightful island offer a good variety of watersports, tavernas and discos.
As dusk falls, the browning daytime of population moves inland to feast on local fare….. but the beach doesn’t stay lifeless for long. A quite different species takes the night shift, as the Loggerhead sea turtles come ashore. These peaceful creatures have long been endangered in the Mediterranean waters and have adopted Zakynthos as their most important nesting area, where their conservation is taken very seriously.
The World Wide Fund For Nature have undertaken steps to protect them. Founded in 1961 the "WWF" has helped to create awareness of the threats to the natural environment of many islands, worldwide, helping to save them from extinction.
How to get there: By Road and Sea: From whatever place of continental Greece you stand, first of all you must get to Kylini, a small harbor on the Peloponnese mainland. There several ferries make the 1hr 30min. trip daily to Zante. By air: There is one flight daily from Athens on Olympic Airways to the town of Zakynthos.
