Southern Tasmania & the Tasman Peninsula General Information
The southern area of Tasmania was one of the first parts of the state to be settled extensively by Europeans. As such it has a large proportion of the states early structures. Examples of both civilian and convict residences and facilities can still be found - many in excellent states of repair. Examples or more modern engineering marvels can be found both in Hobart and especially in the Gordon River hydro-electic scheme. Also many of the State's oldest and most impressive forests can be found in this region - especially around the Huon Valley.

Port Arthur: One of the most feared destinations for convicts of the 19th century , many of Port Arthur's stone buildings still remain. It was originally opened by Governor Arthur in 1830 and became notorious for its strict discipline. It closed in 1877 and eventually fell into disuse. In addition to the prison buildings you can visit the Isle of the Dead - the burial ground for the settlement.The site is open every day and also gives night time ghost tours. The actual Port Arthur site is located on the Tasman Peninsula - an area noted for its coastal formations such as Tasman's Arch and Tessellated Pavement. This area is well worth stopping at on the way to Port Arthur.

Wilderness & Waterways: Located in the south of Tasmania are many National Parks and other unspoilt wilderness areas. The Huon and Picton Rivers are located in this region and allow both cruising and white-water rafting and kayaking. Also in the area is the Tahune Forest Reserve , Hartz Mountains National Park and the Southern Wilderness. Also in this area are Lake Pedder and Lake Gordon which have been linked to form the largest inland freshwater store in Australia. Linked to these lakes is one of the most important hydro-electric power plants in the country and if the technology isnt your sort of thing just sit back and go fishing for the trout that both lakes are stocked with.
