Sauerland is a leisure region for all seasons. Its typical low mountainous landscape, with numerous reservoirs, dams and rivers offers marvellous opportunities for all forms of winter and water sports, fascinating trails for walkers and horseriders, thrilling descents for hang-gliders. Siegerland is a famous source of ores, minerals, copper, silver, lead and of course slate, a material which stamps the faces of the towns and villages of both the region and its neighbours. Due to their well-preserved historical centers many places are designated as monuments of international renown. Popular among visitors are the many museums, which in this region are frequently disused mines, caves and industrial heritages. For children and their parents the Karl May cowboy and Indian plays in Elspe are an added attraction.
