The Thrakeans are considered to be the first inhabitants of the disrrict of Kavala. The city they built was originally called Neapolis and together with Philippous were the most significant of the area.
At one of the city-entrances we are met by arches of the Roman water reservoirs, the old bridge with the narrow channel that brought water from the surrounding mountains.
Near the harbor Imaret stands out , a building of characteristically Turkish architecture built by the founder of the Egyptian Dynasty, Mohammed Ali, in 1817. In the same neighborhood you can see parts of Byzantine walls and you can enjoy the view over the city.
A visit to Kavala and the beautiful fishing villages of this district can be combined with a visit to the significant archaeological site of Philippon, near the village of Krinides.
High and imposing, the mountain of Pangeo dominates the area, surrounded by myths, legends and its "innards" full of gold. According to mythology Dionysos had his sanctuary here and he taught the locals how to cultivate the vineyards.
The sources of gold of Pangeo have been known since antiquity and we can still see old abandoned gold mines.
