GIPPSLAND Attractions
Gippsland is a magnificent place to explore. Places like Gippsland Lakes, Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory are places that must not miss.
Gippsland Lake - the biggest natural attraction in East Gippsland. Where green dairy pastures give way to open cut mines, and vast waterways and rainforests abound. The attractions are unique and give tourists a view of Australian country life in a picturesque and accessible setting. Nine thousand years ago, a vast system of rivers, lakes, lagoons and islands was enclosed by 140km of the most secluded, untouched ocean beaches in the world - to create the largest inland waterways system in Australia. The Lakes' gentle waters and undisturbed islands provide a haven for a staggering array of wildlife; black swans, pelicans, herons, dolphins, koalas, kangaroos, possums and even wombats.
Phillip Island - just an hour and a half's drive from Melbourne. Its entrance at San Remo offers spectacular views over the Island's fishing fleet which is nestled beneath the Phillip Island Bridge. Yon can see the famous Fairy Penguins on parade at dusk as they make their way up the sand dunes weary after a hard day's fishing. The Island is also a natural home for koalas and shearwaters. You can visit the Seal Rocks and historic French Island, where you will find koalas in abundance and the remains of an old prison farm.
Wilsons Promontory - this is the most southerly tip of Australia you can really come to terms with nature. Go on an overnight walk to the Lighthouse and Sealers Cove or on one of the many shorter walks. Go camping at Tidal River or diving. There are so many private little cobes and inlets to explore and some of the whitest, most untouched beaches can be found within - you'll feel like you're the first person ever to set foot in some of them.
In the south eastern corner, where Victoria narrows to form a sharp point, there exist a wild and untouched land known as The Wilderness Coast. From its towering native gums and rainforests to its wild and windy beaches, this place appears to have suspended in time.
