Central Tasmania General Information

The central part of Tasmania was originally colonized in the form of a number of garrison stations intended to link Launceston and Hobart. Today this journey is often taken along the Midlands Highway which runs through many of these old posts. Also located in central Tasmania are a number of lakes and mountains , many of which are contained in national parks such as Lake St. Clair National Park.

Central Tasmania Attractions

Ross is one of the most interesting towns in this region. It was named in 1821 by Governor Macquarie and was originally a garrison town . It became a leading business centre of the district and the home of some of the world's best sheep runs. One of the most interesting features of this town is an ornate convict-built bridge. The carvings on this bridge earned one of the convicts a pardon for the work he performed.

Cradle Mountain National Park and Lake St.Clair National Park occupy large sections of Central Tasmania. Located within these regions are unspoilt temperate rainforests ideal for bushwalking during the summer. The lakes of the region provide the opportunity for fishing , watersports and simple relaxation. In the winter there are usually significant snowfalls in these regions - which make them idea for both cross country and downhill skiing.
